There’s something very future-‘90s about songstress SZA’s hairstyle, the one she wore on the red carpet for the 91st Academy Awards red carpet on Sunday night, and it feels perfect for a night out right now.
Though we were deprived of her performance (she and Kendrick Lamar opted out of performing “All the Stars,” which appeared in Black Panther, live at the Oscars) we’re still very glad she decided to attend, especially since it had been rumored that she might not decide to show at all. Thankfully, and for the sake of our aesthetic inspiration, those rumors weren’t true. The loose tendrils, the volume on high… Both romantic and cool, this is a style that can easily be made your own. Grab your curling iron for this one.
First, start with texture all over. Then, says TONI&GUY Regional Creative Director, Stephen Jaime, gather hair at the high crown without being too precious about it, as messy and undone is what you want here. Secure with pins, or even a hair tie will do, whatever normally works for you. Then selectively pull out a few face-framing pieces at the front and a few more from 360-degrees around, and simply curl those tendrils for added texture.
Additional flare is optional, of course. But we’re just saying: a fresh flower never hurt anybody.
